"It's life, Jim, but not as we know it."
Feb. 15th, 2010 05:48 pmI dimly recall a while back promising a few people I'd let them know what's going to be happening this year as far as my offline life and work are concerned.
It goes something a bit like this. The Mother, along obviously with both Sisters and assorted animals, is moving to a village (let's call it Village X) about half an hour away from where we both currently live in about a month or so. It's being let to her by the husband of one of our customers and it's kind of gorgeous. Along with other snazzy bits and features the there is a two-storey workshop on the premises, which needs refurbishing but should be ready for use by the beginning of next year. The Mother is planning to rent that space as well when the time comes around.
Which means... The Mother and yours truly have a year to build up the business to the extent where she can self-sustain at the new house and in the workshop, and I can self-sustain at the shop we're both working out of right now. I have a year to get trained up to the point where I can take a roll of fabric and produce a complete set of curtains/blinds/whatever with minimal - ideally no - input from The Mother. At the moment I can do pretty much anything that involves handstitching. I need to be able to use the commercial grade sewing machine we have, plus anything else as required.
I also need to start learning to drive. Even if I maintain relatively little direct contact with customers while working out of the shop (like going out and measuring/delivering/putting up etc.) I'll still need to be able to run between the shop in town and the Mother's house in Village X if necessary - not really fair if she's stuck doing all the work related running around by herself! And obviously, I need to get a car for when qualifications have been obtained, which means I'll need to move at the end of my second ternancy-term-thingy at the end of October as I'm going to need somewhere with parking... and where I live right now the parking would be on the town's high street - hardly ideal ;)
So basically... by this time next year I'm supposed to be a largely autonomous curtain producing outfit, with a heck of a lot more responsibility than I currently have. Pretty scary stuff, but I'm kind of looking forward to the challenge. For something I never really considered as an option when I left university, this is turning into potentially a fully fledged career. And I do enjoy the work, which is something :D
At The Mother's this evening, as I really need to get my utilities at the flat sorted out - I thought everything had been squared with the various suppliers, and apparently I was wrong about that. Grr. Argh. Have roped The Mother into basically look over my shoulder and make sure I don't screw anything up this time ;) Phone and internet can wait for a couple of months, at least until I can guaruntee I'm paying my bills like a good citizen.
