A couple of weeks ago I posted about taking automatic screencaps using the VLC media player. It ended up not working at all for me - and from what I gather using the googlemachine, I'm not necessarily the only person who hasn't been able to take auto caps that way.

Tonight I did a bit more googling, and stumbled across someone who said that they used Virtual Dub Mod to take automatic screencaps. It's a program I use to encode .avi files so that I can use them to make music videos. And take manual screencaps, amusingly enough. But anyway. This someone did not elaborate on the hows or wherefores of the capping process, but one more googlemachine use later, and I found this. It's a very simple - which helps, given the fairly complex user interface that Virtual Dub has - and concise tutorial on how to set the program to take automatic screencaps. It assumes a basic awareness of frame rates, though with a bit of trial-and-error it's pretty easy to figure out what you need. You can also set it to only screencap a certain portion of video out of the whole thing, which is pretty cool.

That said, my computer is apparently still allergic to Virtual Dub, as evidenced by the fact it just crashed while running it. For the zillionth time. But I no longer care, because I can now take lots and lots of screencaps without risking carpal tunnel. Or something.

:D
