The Rules: Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fic-favorites you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most. Then tag five other people to do the same.

The Other Rules: After each story, add a little something about what you learned about writing in the process. Or, if you didn't learn anything, add something that fits contextually with the time of writing the story.

1. Miracle Worker (Star Trek: Enterprise)
Lesson Learnt: That working with betas is a fulfilling experience, especially when you know each other fairly well already and can discuss things like continuity, characterisation and weird flaily moments without anyone flouncing, which made my first experience having a proper beta all the more awesome. I also spent fourteen months on and (mostly) off working on MW, so I also learned that contrary to what Greg House says, perseverance does equal worthiness, as I love my alien apocalyptic drama to pieces.

2. Mundus Vult Decipi (Stargate SG-1)
Lesson Learnt: That plotting things out ahead may be well and good, but ultimately winging it in the face of unexpected directions and real life time constraints is not necessarily a bad thing. On a more technical note, I also learned how to write action scenes as if they were actually happening, ie showing and not telling, which was the result of a prolonged email exchange with my SG-1 beta (see a pattern emerging here? Lol).

3. Father's Day (Star Trek: Enterprise)
Lesson Learnt: That every so often, it's okay to take my own substantive daddy and emotional issues and project them onto fictional characters. This was one of the gentler cathartic pieces I've written, and I've come to seriously love the sub-universe it's spawned within my own fics, so much so that I've taken Stuart Reed's backstory as personal canon.

4. Containment (Star Trek: Enterprise)
Lesson Learnt: I wrote this for the 2008 Enterprise Ficathon, after almost a three year hiatus from the fandom, and I surprised myself by really enjoying both the creative and writing processes, so I guess the lesson here is that with a little enthusiasm lots of things are possible, and writing and getting feedback for Containment has also spurred me to start writing again for Enterprise, we'll see how that goes :)

5. A Part of Me (House, MD)
Lesson Learnt: This was an experiment in writing drabbles, each based on the title of songs in a particular album, and it's still one that I regard as successful, mostly because I tend to get somewhat verbose when writing fic and I wanted to see if I could pull something off with a fixed low word count.

Oh, I think I'm gonna snag this. Nothing like a little navel gazing on a slow sunday. ;o)
