Vidding meme
Sep. 2nd, 2008 12:43 am1. When did you first start vidding?
June or July 2005, I think. Definitely that summer.
2. What would you say was your inspiration or motivation to start doing it?
I'd started downloading SG-1 and ST:Enterprise vids (on dialup, the horror!), and once I figured out that it would be possible to create similar things myself once I landed a computer with XP and computer-based episodes, I started planning various ideas in my head until I got my first laptop. Hobby... kinda turned into an obsession on me!
3. What do you or have you vidded?
Star Trek: Enterprise, and I spent almost eight months planning before I started on Stargate SG-1. Moved onto Stargate: Atlantis, and recently branched out into House MD and Battlestar Galactica.
4. Where do you draw your inspiration from for vids? Is it the song? An idea? Someone else?
It all starts with the song. I get loads of "mental vids" while I'm listening to music on buses/trains/at home, and it depends on how hard the idea grabs me, or how clearly the mental vid comes out as to whether I have a go at making it properly. A couple of times the vid's come from a challenge; I'll be given a set theme, character or storyline, and I search out appropriate music and clips to match the brief.
5. What was your favorite video to make or do?
Grace Kelly. The initial idea had me cackling for days, and after crashing my second laptop repeatedly trying to make the vid using Windows Movie Maker (which may or may not have been the straw that broke the vid making camel's back and made me upgrade to a faster, infinitely more shiny laptop), I eventually finished the damn thing eight months after starting it, over two laptops and three programs. It was a fucking nightmare to make, but so completely worth it, especially when in the end it came together over the course of about two days :D
6. What was your least favorite video to make or do?
Bursting Through. I don't know why, I just really didn't like it. Maybe the utter lack of Teyla or real Team Sheppard moments onscreen, or it was something slightly outside my comfort zone. Which isn't usually a problem. I don't know, to be honest; there's just this vague sense of dissatisfaction with the finished video :/
7. Which video are you most proud of?
Tie between The Mass (DS9) and Freedom (BSG). They both have plots, they're both (I think) quite intense character studies, and Tigh is now, and probably will always be, my favourite Battlestar character (am even thinking of making a season 4 "remix" of the vid once I get the DVDs, lol). Sisko... not so much, but I love the myth of the Emissary.
8. What's the best feedback or comment you've ever gotten?
This for a trailer I made for the
house_bigbang challenge last year. I go back and read it everytime I think I'm a crap vidder.
9. What's your opinion on clip theft?
Morally grey in theory - I understand not having access to clips, which was my position very early on when moving into SG-1 vidding. Despite that I waited until I could download copies of episodes I already had on DVD, since I didn't even know I could rip them then! Now I rip everything I use - I've got almost 300gb of TV shows and films ripped from DVD on my external hard drive, and more DVDs on the shelf.
On the other hand, in practice it is slightly skeevy and morally dubious. With the amount of editing that goes into vidding, it can at best be difficult to tell what has or hasn't been edited in one way or another. So, no. Either find a way to get the episodes yourself, or ask someone to tell or show you howto get them.
10. Favorite genre to vid to (comedy, angst, romance, drama, AU)?
I've been trying to vid crossovers for a while now, but nothing's come of any of the ideas, simply because I keep trying to push for a coherent vid with some semblance of plot or setup, rather than two concurrent vids that happen to be set to different parts of the same song. I like humorous, bordering on slightly cracky ideas as well (again, Grace Kelly, as well as some of the early Enterprise vids).
11. Favorite pairing(s)?
And this has what to do with vidding, precisely? ;p
Garak/Bashir, House/Wilson, Six/Baltar, Rodney/Teyla all have vidbunnies of one form or another.
Also, one day I will make that Wilson/Julie vid. YES I WILL.
12. What just drives you up the wall when it comes to vidding?
Constant distractions, not having clips that match the pretty pictures in my head. That kind of thing ;)
13. Is vidding a pastime, hobby or something to help gain experience to do more later in life?
It's an all-consuming hobby, and it does provide experience as well. Attention to detail (I'm looking at you, Bicycle Race!), better non-associative memory. Or something.
Mostly it's something to keep me occupied, lol, which is why the Mother has never objected to the practice, and has even been known to enjoy some of the vids I've made!
14. What is your latest project or idea for your next vid if your muse isn't dead?
I'm not making any at the moment, but I've got one song that could either turn into a general Atlantis video, or a pessimistic Bashir character study. There's also one focusing on the New Caprica arc, and this one idea I've had for a while, which is to make a post-series Garak/Bashir vid that's set just after Andy Robinson's "A Stitch in Time" novel.
15. Finally, what kind of words of wisdom would you offer someone who wants to vid/is a newbie?
DO IT. DO EEEEEEEEET. And if you have fun, keep at it.
