Try the Pie

crazy_celebrian and I went to see Sweeney Todd at the cinema last night, at her behest. Looking back on it in the literally cold light of day, all I can say is: don't believe the hype.
Do not get me wrong. It is not a bad film; I quie enjoyed it in parts. But it is not something I would seek out to rewatch, nor remember pithy quotes from in a week or a month, and to paraphrase one review that stuck in my mind while viewing the film, "There are a surprising lack of memorable songs in this film... so what is the point of it being a musical?"
On the other hand, however, Stephen Sondheim's weaving of the music and lyrics into the everydayish conversations of the characters was quite skilfully done, and aside from a few instances of overly melodramatic music and pipe organs, the soundtrack was fairly pleasant, and in keeping with the tone of the film. But I still did not find it memorable.
Also, little sister, if by some freakish chance of nature you stumble across this entry, I wish to re-emphasise the point: you do not want to see this film. Regardless of Johnny Depp, and regardless of... well, anything else, to be honest. You may be able to stomach some of the more invasive medical procedures of House, M.D., and you may not bat an eyelid at some of the firefights and explosions in the likes of NCIS and Heroes, but please believe me when I say you will not be able to handle the more gruesome aspects of Sweeney Todd.
Besides which, you are only 15, and this film is rated an 18. So there.
In other news, I had another dissertation meeting this morning, and it went much better than I hadfeared expected. My proposed outline of a particlar aspect of the politics of Kenyan nationalism-stroke-independence (yes, really) has been tweaked somewhat by the tutor, and I have been advised to seek a more analytical approach to the subject matter, lest I get caught up in an overabundance of narrative.
In other words, I now know what the hell I'm doing, yay!
So as well as that hard slog to look forward to, I also have to start making more headway with The Colder Water. Yes, I do.
