I spent the last couple of hours browsing various online storage and webhosting packages instead of working on my research paper. Which I think I'm going to need a serious stint in Keele Library for. Which won't be until next Monday afternoon/evening/Tuesday no thanks to my family's absurd notion I come home for the full three weeks at Christmas because I spent a whole three months sequestered in the Bubble.
But anyway. Online solutions for that other thing I do. Vidding.
t_eyla has pointed me in the direction of dothost.eu which (she says) is a very cool free webhosting service, and it's where her site is hosted, and the one she's writing for another friend. Though until I finally get around to designing my site, I won't know that personally.
So then I went looking for various online storage packages, and although I had originally been planning to go with Supanames, as it's where my mum had her last two sites, which I managed - and quite easily, I might add - for her, I went browsing through some other site/storage packages. However, the basic Supanames package is just shy of £60 for one year, so I ended up going back to just looking for storage, in search of a better deal.
the_kawoosher has a very useful list of free packages and services, from which I found Snapdrive, which offers a 10gb package for the equivalent of approximately £25.23 a year. That includes support, upload interfaces, file organisation and direct downloads, not to mention a pretty good bandwidth allocation. It also means I would be able to host other things, for example TV episodes or films for people, at least temporarily.
I think I'm going to go with that. The lower price definitely appeals to my studenty sensibilities, and from what I can tell from the other people using it, Snapdrive is more reliable than other storage providers, which can be prone to removing users' files without warning. It will have to wait a couple of weeks though, but I doubt I will desperately be in need of it before then.
Also, on a completely unrelated note, my brother lent me an "accordion metal" (his words) CD last week, and it is really, really good. Hee.

Date: 2008-01-08 11:07 pm (UTC)Why don't you get an account at fileden.com? It's 1GB storage and 5GB traffic/month. It's not 10GB, but srsly, would you even use 10GB? The upload is a bit slow, too, but it's free. They don't delete your stuff, and they let you upload anything except .exe-files. I've been using it for a while now, and I never had any trouble.

ifwhen I get around to making the vids on my to-do list. And even with the oodles of extra space I would have left on the snapdrive account after vids and the odd mp3 or whatever, it will still be there if I need to shift or back up a large amount of other things. It's also the bandwidth issue as well; I'm happy enough to pay out for this, if it means more people would be able to access what I make. Then again I'm almost certain I'm of the school of 'you get what you pay for'. And even the snapdrive thing only works out for the one year, I won't exactly consider it money wasted. Unless I end up completely blocked and only produce a handful of drabbles and one single vid, like last year. But let's not no there just yet! XD
