They're bad news. They really are. There are two existing -- and occasionally mutually exclusive -- canons to bring together with some level of cohesion. There's balance to be maintained between the two canons. Characterisation has to be maintained; if, for example, Character A in Canon X has absolutely no reason to believe that aliens exist, let alone that a facility underneath a mountain in Colorado over in Canon Y has been sending teams to different planets for nearly ten years, and that Character A has to track down Character B who belongs in Canon Y's universe, but at some point in his life was a key part of Canon X...
It's headache inducing.
Which is my own damn fault. I start writing this crossover of DOOM last night, and now, while watching DVDs from Show/Canon X, I get to wondering... who the hell's going to beta this if/when it gets finished? Nobody I know watches X. Sure, they're all into Y, but that's not all I need, especially since the aforementioned Character A from Show X bears a... striking resemblance to Character L in Show Y, which is half the damn reason the crossover came about in the first place.
I've been looking around on
sga_beta, but there's no indication anywhere that any of the listed betas even watch Show X, let alone be willing to beta a fic that straddles its canon.
Which brings me to the more fun question of this diarrhoea of the keyboard... who do I now get to watch DVD rips of Show X in order that they may beta for me...??
Cue the evil grin ;)

Date: 2007-09-17 05:08 pm (UTC)And that's the tricky part, isn't it? Assuming that it's going to get finished in the first place ;)
But who knows? Maybe closer to, or after Christmas, when I've started cursing whatever deity that I ever picked Africa for my dissertation, maybe I'll get this baby finished, and you'll get a soft copy in the mail, along with three seasons' worth of rips...
And I know you would if you could :). I'm just gonna hafta find some other poor sucker to pick on this time, aren't I? ;)

I'm just whining though. And it's a fair point about crossovers, though.
And of course, all of this assumes I'm ever going to finish the fic; my track record with fic completion lately has been.... well, bloody pathetic ;)
